Foundations of College Writing

This semester (Spring 2015), I took Foundations of College Writing with Dr.Sherry. In this course, we focused on a few objectives which are: the CLUE project, the EAR project and lastly, the TELL project. These projects helped us transform our personal experiences and research into something else that we could create for particular audiences. In the CLUE project, we took pictures surveys, interviews, and field notes, generating evidence through ethnographic methods. Our purpose is to describe the culture of college life at Bloomsburg, or the practices of a particular group, through attention to what values are expressed by where and how people interact. Our audience is to researchers in our particular field. In the EAR project, we turned the results of our ethnographic research and our own experience as a student into three other genres: one for an incoming student at BU, one for a family or faculty member, and one for a potential employer. Finally for the TELL project, we composed a personal narrative about what a college education means to us. What have we gained and/or given up for this? The audience went to ourselves, and its purpose is to reflect on what we believe and where do we come from as a student. All three of these projects were very helpful for me, because it is a different kind of writing that I was not taught in high school. They also have helped me as a student to recognize various about myself that I have not noticed before such as where I come from a student or even how other students on Bloomsburg campus come from different cultures. Overall, this course was great and I think that it will help in the future far as research in the biology field.

Goal A- Students will be able to compose for particular audiences and purposes
The Ear Project represents this goal because we had to transform our work for a certain audience and for a certain reason. I turned the results of my ethnographic research into a brochure for parents. I decided to do this, because a brochure is much easier for parents to read. Parent usually do not have time to read flyers or a letter and overall, a brochure is easier for parents to put in there bag and read it later on when they get home. For a possible employer, I decided to use a flyer. I chose to use a flyer, because personally when I see flyers that hanging up that says "Now Hiring", it simply catches my eye. Lastly, I thought that a letter would be better for students. As a college student, I think it is important to learn how to write a letter for future reference and we often receive letters in our email from professors, jobs, internships etc.

This is an example of a satire that I made for college students:

What Are You REALLY Drinking?

One Cup can change EVERYTHING

Goal B- Students will be able to compose using language and conventions appropriate to genre
The Clue Project represents this goal because we had to take surveys, interviews, and field notes to generate evidence through ethnographic methods. For the Clue project, I wrote an essay about how students should balance their social life with their school work. I used research from Rubenstone’s (2013) Balancing College School Work and Social Life and Frazier (2012) School, Work, and Social Life- There has to be a balance.

My Clue Project:

Goal C- Students will be able to read, select, and use evidence critically to formulate and support arguments

Goal C states that students will be able to read, evaluate, and use examples from readings to make arguments to give support. The CLUE project is a good example for this goal as well. For this project, we used and analyzed research to back up our arguments and opinions.

My Clue Project:

Goal D-Students will be able to interpret and compose in a variety of media and print/non-print genres

This goal means for students to read and create in multiple ways using multiple forms. The example from class such as the C.R.A.P principles represents this goal for the EAR project. The C.R.A.P principles is an academic tool that we used to present in our work. The "C" means contrast which is the color and/or brightness that is used in that type of media. The "R" means repetition which stands for a symbol, message, picture etc. that is repeated for a certain reason. "A" stands for audience which who your media is to. Lastly, the "P" stands for proximity. Proximity is how the type of media is categorized. For example, a Facebook profile will have different sections for family, education, job history and other important things about you. I used the C.R.A.P principle to explain my work in the Ear project.

Here is an example of the C.R.A.P principles that I used to explain a flyer that I have created:
C.R.A.P Principle
I used two colors which is pink and green. I then used the information in black, which makes the tone of the flyer more serious and that way people will catch their eye to the important information (contrast). I then used repetition in the word "Flawless" because that is the name of the ladies night and I wanted to attract girls because "Flawless" is a girls anthem song made by Beyoncé Knowles. I aligned the information very well and I also took my time to use certain fonts for certain information. For an example, the title is very big and the date is big as well because these are the things that people want to know about the event (proximity).

Goal E- Students will be able to discuss and apply appropriate writing processes both individually and in collaborative contexts

This goal states that students will be able to revise work individually and with others. To represent this goal, I will be using an evaluation from Dr.Sherry for the Tell project.

Here is an excerpt from my TELL Draft:
" Even though I will never let it go, I can say that it has helped me move on with plenty of
situations mentally and emotionally. When I was around my tweens and early teen ages, I would
throw it away if I was upset about something. Later on that night, my mom would wash it and
put it back on my bed because she somehow knew that this shirt was a part of me. "

Here is the same excerpt with more added details to better the concept of the TELL project:

"Even though I will never let it go, I can say that it has helped me move on with plenty of
situations mentally and emotionally. When I was around my tweens and early teen ages, I would
throw it away if I was upset about something. Later on that night, my mom would wash it and
put it back on my bed because she somehow knew that this shirt was a part of me. Education
sometimes mean that you have to push something's aside in order to succeed in something else. It
also means that you have to learn how to accept things for what they are and that is what I did. I
had to learn how to accept the fact that this shirt was a part of my life and if it wasn’t in my life, I
would not be complete."

Overall, I think that was a great course. I have taken plenty of courses that I can honestly say I have not learned much in, but I learned a lot about life and skills that I will be able to use in the future.
